The Serial Position Effect: Why First and Last Impressions Matter

What Is the Serial Position Effect?
The serial position effect, first studied by Hermann Ebbinghaus, describes our tendency to recall the first and last items in a series better than those in the middle. The enhanced recall of the first items is called the primacy effect; the enhanced recall of the last items is called the recency effect. Items in the middle of a list are least likely to be remembered.
Implications for UX Design
- Navigation menus: Place the most important items first and last in your navigation. Middle items get significantly less attention — avoid burying your primary CTA in the centre of a nav bar.
- Onboarding flows: Make the first screen and the completion screen memorable. Users form an overall impression of the experience from its start and end (this connects directly to the Peak-End Rule).
- Feature lists and pricing pages: If you have 6 features in a list, position the most compelling differentiators at positions 1 and 6. The middle four will be skimmed.
- Form design: Users remember the first field (which anchors expectations) and the last field (which frames the submission). Make both intentional.
Working With Recency in Notifications
Recency bias also explains why the most recent experience with a product dominates overall perception. An app that crashes on exit is remembered as "that buggy app" even if 99% of sessions ran perfectly. Design your exit states, success screens, and session endings with as much care as your onboarding.
